    These are a solid, high quality set of dumbbells for the price. I initially went to a well-known chain store to buy a similar set, but they cost over twice as much, so I thought I'd give these a try. Twenty pounds per arm wasn't enough weight for me, so I bought four extra 5-pound plates through Amazon (also made by CAP) for $20 total. So for a total of $65 including shipping I now have a really decent set of 30 pound dumbbells–enough to challenge my scrawny little muscles, at least for now. Also—I couldn't believe how quickly they shipped. I had the dumbbells within 2 days of the order.

    The plates and bar have an attractive baked black enamel surface coating on them. After over one month's use, they haven't chipped yet, but then again I use them on a carpeted area. The star-shaped collars easily screw onto the ends of the bar and can then be twirled the rest of the way with a couple of twirls. Nice and smooth. Keeping the dumbbells at waist height when you change weights makes them a snap to change. Changing the plates on the floor would get old in a hurry. The rubber grips on the bars are a nice touch and make them easier to handle.

    One drawback is the smell. The smell was not overpowering, but very noticeable (but it's basically gone now—see below). The plates and the bars had two different smells. To me, the plates smelled like uncured paint solvent. The rubber grips are the big odor culprit. They smell like asphalt–possibly rubber that was not fully cured during the manufacturing process. I know something about this from my work.

    The solution to the smell—low heat. About 120-130 degrees F. If you can find a nice hot place outside in the sun to put them, like up against a wall—-that should do the trick (first make sure you separate all the parts). I put mine outside for three 90 degree days up against a very hot wall, and the smell almost completely disappeared. If you live in a cold climate, I don't know what to tell you. Some kind of baking oven should work. I wouldn't use your house oven unless you like asphalt flavored muffins. You could try to find a friend with a metal shop who has an annealing oven, or maybe a paint shop with a paint bake oven. It's possible the smell may go away over time without using heat, but I wanted it gone.

    I outgrew my CAP 12lb pair for most things. These are perfectly respectable dumbbells for a decent price. They look good and work fine. I'm not sure about the reviews saying there are sharp edges. Unless you're rubbing dumbells on your naked body or planning to lick them, these are perfectly fine. They do start coming unscrewed a little with use but in my experience none stay locked. I'm going to buy the barbell too.

    HOWEVER, it should be noted, as many reviewers already have, that the weights, the weights that you put on the end of the bars themselves, consist of
    4 six lb weights and
    4 2.5 lb weights,
    thus adding up to 34 lbs of pure weight, which, I suppose if you add up the two bars, would equal out to 40 lbs, just didn't want people to think that they were getting forty lbs of movable weights.

    That and the shortness of bars of the dumbbells themselves are a little bothersome, as it becomes difficult when you need to put a lot of weight on each side; sometimes the bars are not long enough.

    Other than those issues, these are again, a great set, and I would recommend them to most.

    Nice little adjustable dumbbell set. Comes with two 3 lb bars with spinners (to keep the plates from falling off), four 6 lb and four 2.5 lb plates. So fully loaded each is 20 pounds (6×2+2.5×2+3). These will also accept any plates with 1" holes, so you can add extra plates to up the weight. I picked up four (used) 10 lb plates, so I can now get each DB up to 40 lbs (which is plenty for me at this point). If you're looking to start a home DB workout routine or ease back into weight training after some time couch training, this is a good starter set. Won't break the bank, easy to use…

    This Dumbbell appears to go out of stock on Amazon very quick. I grabbed one before it did. For a pair of 20 pounds (each, when it's max weight) dumbbells, I don't think you can get a better price. No tax and Free shipping, awesome!!! It doesn't hurt to have the flexibility to add the weights later on. These don't rollover when u keep them in a flat floor. Like the other reviewer said, it has padded handles and I hope it lasts. The only downside I feel is that there is good amount of handle length protrudes on both ends after u load the weights and screw them in place. This may catch ur shorts while doing, let's say biceps (or) hit the protruded handle of the other dumbbell while doing, let's say swimmer's press. This is however minor. For the price and quality, this is the best dumbbell around. Note that u get 20 lbs each dumbbell (the bigger weights are 6 lbs each, smaller weights are 2.5 each and I guess the handle is around 3 lbs each). So, One dumbbell assembly = 6lbs + 6lbs + 2.5lbs + 2.5lbs + 3 lbs = 20 lbs).

    Not expensive. A good starter set for a beginner like me. Enough variety in the weights to adjust rep's/sets for different muscles and exercises. Will add a few more weight plates later on. Only concern I have is the question of how long the plastic locking mechanisms will last, in contrast to something metal. By the time I need to upgrade my gear, though, I'm sure this will have paid for itself in gains. Solid and simple.

    The box it arrived in seemed flimsy and a little ugly, and assembled in haste. Weights were all paper-padded in, though, and didn't seem to suffer any damage en route. I didn't buy this for the packaging!

    I really am glad I bought this set. I was paying 30 a month for a gym membership that basically included me only using the hand weights and treadmill twice a week. So for the price, I'm coming out ahead.
    The handle it self is 3lbs. The plate set was a pretty stinky when it came in, but I'm assuming it went away because I don't smell anything anymore. The weights do become loose and I do have to constantly be tightening if I'm moving too quickly. But like the title states. It good enough for me since I'm such a casual user. I can't even us the 6lb plates yet. So I loved this product. Perfect for me 🙂
